SMA Sunny Webbox Review
The SMA Sunny WebBox provides a connection between the operator’s computer and/or the free Sunny Portal web site (www.sunnyportal.com). The WebBox can be connected to a Sunny Boy, Sunny Tower, Sunny Island, or Sunny Central inverter (up to 50 units). Connection is made with 4-conductor twisted pair cable between the inverter’s RS-485 output and the Sunny WebBox terminals. The Sunny WebBox connects to a local area network (LAN) with an Ethernet cable or to a phone line with the optional modem.

The Sunny WebBox stores system performance data in its internal 8 MB memory or on a standard SD
memory card and can be set to upload the data to the Sunny Portal website at user-selectable intervals. Password protected. 5-year warranty.
The Sunny WebBox can be a very useful tool for installers as well. Installers can keep watch on new installations making sure that they are operating as specified. For new home construction, entire blocks of homes can be monitored by a single Sunny WebBox allowing both the system owners and installers a way to monitor the performance of the systems. This is also an excellent tool for demonstration systems. In addition, it provides a method for service personnel to receive prior notice to any potential issues or to check the status of a system before traveling to the site.
The Sunny WebBox continuously records the performance of your solar power system. At an interval chosen by the user, it transfers that information to the Sunny Portal. The Sunny Portal is a website where your performance data is stored and displayed graphically for your review. The Sunny Portal service is provided free of charge by SMA.
The Sunny Portal is also very useful for installers who want to keep tabs on newly installed systems to ensure they are performing to specifications. Because each Sunny WebBox can monitor up to 50 inverters, even an entire block of solar systems could be monitored by one Sunny WebBox. The Sunny Portal can easily keep you up to date by automatically emailing a daily summary of a system’s performance.
The Sunny WebBox supports all existing communication modes used in SMA inverters and integrates easily into new or existing systems. The Sunny WebBox can access the internet via network or dial-up connections.
The Sunny WebBox provides an elegant solution to many of the industry’s communications needs and is a welcome addition to the SMA family of products.
